Given we offer a variety of different services at Christophers Remedial Massage, you would be forgiven for wondering how deep tissue massage differs from other methods and whether it is right for you. If you are feeling uncertain or are worried about how painful it might be, here is a quick guide to help you understand what to expect from a session.

A brief overview of deep tissue massage

Deep tissue massage is a form of massage focused on long, deep strokes that target inner layers of muscle tissue. The goal of this method is to address tension deep within various parts of the body in order to reduce pain, inflammation and lack of mobility. Deep tissue massage can be particularly effective for those who suffer from a range of chronic pains and muscular injuries. Though it is still remedial in nature, it is a more intense form of massage and is therefore not suitable for those looking for general relaxation.

Is it normal to feel pain during or after the massage?

Because deep tissue massage directly targets areas of tension in deep layers of muscle tissue, it is normal to feel some discomfort or general soreness as this tension is worked out of the body. However, it should never result in severe pain or make existing injuries feel worse. Everyone responds to deep tissue massage differently, so it is important to communicate clearly if the pressure is too much or not enough. Your therapist will ask you about any existing injuries, pain or general stiffness before you begin to make sure treatment is tailored to your needs.

After the massage is finished, you may feel a little discomfort as your body responds to the session. But this should only be relatively mild, fade away quickly and feel different to the pain that you experienced before the therapy a bit like the good sense of discomfort after an intense workout.

Is deep tissue massage right for me?

Deep tissue massage is a safe massaging technique for most people and can be extremely beneficial for those who suffer from major muscle tension, chronic pain and some injuries. Speak with your therapist first to find out what form of massage is most suitable based on your needs.

If you suffer from a health condition, take prescription medication or are at high risk of blood clotting, it is best to check with your doctor first to make sure deep tissue massage is safe for you. It is not recommended for pregnant women to receive this type of massage.
